Power Lift Chairs: Need A Lift? We Can Help.

Power Lift Chairs - The Inside Scoop
Today, technology certainly can make life a lot easier, but it also adds a lot of questions and sometimes headaches. This article will attempt to make one of those innovations a real helping hand, NOT a real pain in the ---- uh BACK. I am speaking of the POWER LIFT CHAIR.

Today as we live longer, we tend to experience more aches and pains. A little assistance in the smallest things can make a tremendous difference. One of those things is standing up from a seated position. Possibly, you are having back problems, sleep problems, digestive problems or maybe none of these. What if you just had hip surgery and can’t sleep in your bed? Will sleeping in ANY chair do? PROBABLY NOT. In all of these situations, the right power lift chair can be invaluable. Let's explore the key points...Features and Benefits
There are many aspects of a power lift chair – all of them should come together to meet YOUR needs and to make life easier. The first aspect that I would consider is functionality. Will this chair put me in the position that feels right to me or are there 4 set positions and that is what I get? Maybe, it is easier for me to stand up from a half seated position – will this chair accommodate me? What if I have special needs? Maybe the doctor has told me to have my feet higher than my head to help my heart. Will my new chair do that?

These are all things that must be considered, but there are more. Will this chair last? Am I going to have to call an 800 number because it is not working right? Is it going to be so loud that I can’t hear the TV? Is it going to squeak and creek more that I do? These too, are extremely important questions to consider.

There also is an aspect that is very significant. IS IT USER FRIENDLY or am I going to have to attend night classes to know how to get it to do what I WANT IT TO DO? Another consideration – Is it pink with blue polka dots or can I get it to fit my décor? The final two are probably things that a lot of us would not think about.

What if I have my feet up, head laid back and the power goes off? I certainly cannot jump up – sorry if nature is calling but I AM LAYING BACK AND CAN’T GET UP!

DOES IT HAVE A BATTERY BACK UP?

The other thing to remember -----------------------

ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL!

If I am 5’ 2” and 110 lbs. – will a chair that accommodates a 300 lb. person work for me? Will a chair that fits the needs of a 6” 4” person be perfect as well for someone 5’4”? Probably not.

Just a passing thought – DO THEY HAVE ONE THAT FITS MY BUDGET?

Having to think about all of these things is making me tired. I am going to my recliner to take a nap and will continue after. Oh, I forgot – it hurts to get out of the recliner.

Seriously, I am sure that you will agree that a power lift chair can be a wonderful addition to your home and life – BUT IT MUST BE ONE THAT FITS YOUR NEEDS.

All of these things are considerations when purchasing a quality power lift chair. Probably the easiest part is buying from someone that you feel has YOUR interest at heart. I might be getting older but that doesn’t mean I don’t have good judgment. I’m not sure if the guy that just told me why the dining room set is so good knows a lot about power lift chairs. Maybe I should deal with power lift chair experts. I also want to deal with someone that is local and will be there when I need them. I want warranties that mean something and last for more than 68 days. Overall, I want a good dependable chair that is made FOR MY SIZE, that gets into the position THAT I WANT and that is backed by good honest people.

IS THAT REALLY ASKING TOO MUCH? Certainly not and that is what we all deserve. I am not going to take a dining room chair put wheels and a motor on it and call it a scooter.

WHY WOULD I BUY ANYTHING OTHER THAT A CHAIR THAT IS MADE AS A POWER LIFT CHAIR?

Mattress Shopping - Why It's So Difficult To Rest Assured

My Start To Blogging
Well, I have always heard so much about blogging, but I never really had anything to say, that is until just now. You see, I sell mattresses for a living, and as you can imagine, that isn't the most interesting profession in the world, but my blog could prove to be quite useful to one particular group of folks out there. Let me explain.

Preparing To Shop For A Mattress
You see, people don't shop for mattresses all that often, so when they need one, they are usually completely lost. Some folks go blazing off into the sunset on their mattress mission prepared to negotiate the local mattress salesman out of their firstborn. Others (the folks this article is aimed at) take a more studious approach. They scour the Internet furiously keyword searching "coil count", "the difference between box spring and foundation", and "what type of mattress will make my husband less lazy". Once this group collects all of the relevant facts, they then set off on a systematic path that bounces from one mattress store to the next thinking that they have this all figured out. That is, until they hit the first showroom...The Mattress Showroom
Mattress stores can be quite intimidating. There are usually enough mattresses to get someone completely confused about what they need. Add to that, most salesmen are commission based, can be quite aggressive, and more often than not, give out misinformation. Then there is the store selling the product. This usually falls into one of four categories.

The All-In-One Superwhizbang Stores
First, there are the Mega Everything Supercenters. These are perfect if you need to pick up some groceries, new tires for the minivan, a mattress set, and have that prosthetic hip installed all in one fell swoop. They have it all at one location and you can buy in bulk. Yippee kayee! Well, let's back up for a moment. Do you really want to trust the next 7-12 years of your sleep to the guy that, aside from helping you find the right level of support for your back, can also tell you why you should use that 10-w30 weight motor oil in a 1988 Camero Z28? It makes sense that you should trust something as important as a good night's sleep to someone that really knows and specializes in mattresses.

The National Mattress/Furniture Store Chains
Second, you have the national mattress/furniture store chains. They usually have huge, high dollar stores with droves of salesmen stalking uh, I mean helping you find your way all over the store. These guys more often than not have very little training, and basically figure it out as they go. These companies will often advertise "locally owned franchise" to give the impression of a local owner. The fact is, most of the time, the franchise fees are huge and all of the profits of this "locally owned" store are sent to corporate headquarters out of state, and out of your local economy. They often advertise silly sales like the "Unbelievable-50%-off-super-mega-fantastic mattress sale going on now through 5 minutes from now!" Those always make me smile. The easiest way to cut through that nonsense is to ask to see where someone has paid the non sale price for the product. Tell them to cover up the customer info and just show you an invoice where they have sold one of the mattress sets at regular price. Another tactic that has always amused me was the totally unrelated freebie add on product. It usually goes something like, "Now through Sunday, buy this queen mattress set for this much money and receive a free cappuccino maker. And don't worry about the markup to offset the free item, because with our financially irresponsible payment options, you won't have to start paying for it until you are on Medicare!"

The Shady Warehouse Guy
The third type of retailer is the discount/wholesale store. Most of the time, these guys operate out of a warehouse, flea market, or basic retail location. You can usually find them through Craig's List (there's nothing wrong with Craig's List - I use it from time to time), or one of those little stick in the ground signs at popular intersections. They usually say something like, Q Pillowtop Sets - $99 - Call 555-RIPOFF. These are the guys you really have to keep an eye on. If someone tells you they will meet you at a warehouse so you can crinkle around on a plastic covered mattress on the floor then you should ask yourself if that business model inspires confidence in the validity of their slumber comfort expertise. Most of these places are selling second hand bedding. The easiest way to cut through the nonsense is to ask to see their business license. If they are operating without a license, it's time to high tail it out of there. The next thing you should ask to see is the law tag on the mattress. Every mattress has a law tag at the head. If the law tag has been removed, someone is trying to hide something, and you should avoid it. If the law tag is any color other than white, or if it has any type of stamp on it, this indicates B stock from the factory. When a customer sends a mattress back to the manufacturer because of a defect (warranty issue), the factory rounds up all of those products, and sells them as "B" stock. It is sold at a discount and with no warranty (because they are obviously already defective). You need to be aware that most of these mattresses have been in a previous customer's home. They have been slept on and have been subjected to bodily fluids, skin cells, and bed bugs. Yummy. The point is, buying from a warehouse or wholesale center can be a real gamble.

The Local Mom and Pop Stores
The fourth type is the locally owned mattress store. That's what we are. These guys come in all shapes and sizes. It's nice to know that you are keeping the business in the community, but there are still some potential downfalls with this group as well. Sometimes, these stores are simply mismanaged. This can show up in many forms. First, a lot of small businesses simply do not have the capital to stock everything they sell. They need you to pay for the product so they can, in turn, pay the supplier and order your mattress set. Though there is nothing wrong with that, it can be quite inconvenient to wait a week or two while great sleep continues to evade you. Lack of expertise can also hinder a local sleepshop's ability to deliver exceptional customer service. Although most owners mean well, they often have a hard time finding experienced staff to help run the stores. You could wind up talking to the same guy that was giving the pros and cons of 10-w30 at the Supercenter the week before. Another potential downfall of the local mattress store is they might not have the ability to be as competitive as some of the large national chains. It's no secret that buying in bulk can yield lower product cost, which in turn can lower the selling prices. In some cases, this can make the national chains more competitive than the local guys. Also, the major brands are very picky about who they sell to. If a small store only carries off-brands, that could be a sign that they have bad credit, haven't been in business for very long, or they don't do enough volume to sustain a major brand account.

Why You Should Buy From Us
Now that I have all of that out of the way, it's time that I tell you why Sit & Sleep Mattress is the place in Savannah, Georgia to buy your next mattress from. We have done everything we can think of to make it convenient and logical for you to buy your next mattress set from us.

- We have everything in stock ready for immediate delivery. When I want something, I want it right now. We have taken the necessary steps to build up over 600 pieces of inventory so you can have what you want right now.

- We carry all of the major brands like Simmons Beautyrest, Sealy Posturpedic, and Tempurpedic. Each brand has their own approach to a good night's sleep, and you would do yourself a disservice to buy from a store that can't show you all of your options in a good side by side comparison.

- Low prices. Price isn't everything, but obviously it's a big part of the shopping process. We are a part of a national commercial buying group that gives us tier one pricing from our vendors. We keep our overhead low and our company lean. Stop by one of our locations and you will not see a pack of salesmen standing around, or an over sized mega-overhead showroom. Instead, we do everything within reason to keep our costs down, in turn, keeping our prices lower than our competitors. Putting our money where our mouths are, we offer a 110% low price guarantee. Visit our website for details.

- Knowledgeable staff without the side of bull. Everyone on our sales team has no less than 10 years experience selling mattresses. We are all factory trained and we know our stuff. If there's a mattress out there that is going to hit the spot for you, we have what it takes to help you find it.

- Professional delivery service. Our delivery team is second to none. We can usually narrow it down to a one hour delivery window. Delivery service is available Monday through Saturday.

- We are Savannah. Everyone on the team, from the delivery staff to the CEO, was born and raised in Savannah. We have deep roots in Savannah, and we give back to the local community.

- Comfort guaranteed. The last thing you want to deal with is choosing the wrong mattress and being stuck with it. We offer a comfort guarantee that safeguards against that because having unsatisfied customers is not an option for us.

If you are still with me, you just got caught up on what has taken me my entire career to figure out. The bottom line is that here at Sit & Sleep Mattress, we will do what it takes to make sure our customers are satisfied. We do very little advertising (to keep our overhead down and our prices low), but in this slow economy, we have experienced tremendous growth. We rely heavily on word of mouth and we encourage out customers to spread the word about the service they receive.

So there it is. That wound up being a lot longer than I planned, but I'm just so passionate about great mattresses. All joking aside, a great night's sleep can really make a difference in your life. If you are interested in a new mattress, stop by one of our locations and we will be happy to get you into the mattress set that is just right for you. I hope you enjoyed reading my first blog, and if you have any questions or would like to discuss anything you just read, feel free to call me at 912-961-0202 seven days a week. We look forward to earning your business!

Coil Free Mattresses: The Future Of Good Sleep

Why Choose A Non-Coiled Bed?
There are several reasons why non-coiled beds are growing in popularity. The main one is that if you buy a GOOD ONE – it is going to solve many of your sleep and bedding problems and last for a long time. First, please notice that I said a non-coiled bed – not a memory foam bed. Certainly a memory foam bed is non-coiled but there are many types of foam. These different foams have different feels and characteristics that distinguish them from one another. In this article I am ONLY speaking of foam beds. I personally feel that beds with water, gel, or air leave a lot to be desired. In this article we will discuss all of the details of coil-free mattresses.I also emphasized a “GOOD ONE” in the beginning. Too often people come in telling me that their 3rd cousin’s boyfriend’s stepsister bought a “TEMPURPEDIC” and it was too hot and broke down in a few years. I assure you that she did not buy a “TEMPURPEDIC”. She probably went to the local big discount store or the “club” store and purchased an all foam bed that was labeled “MEMORY FOAM”, then called it a Tempurpedic. First of all, “TEMPURPEDIC” is NOT memory foam. It is a proprietary foam called TEMPUR MATERIAL. Next is that some foams can be low density memory foam and most likely are mixed with other foams. It can be called a “memory foam” bed as long as it is made of 60% memory foam or VISCO ELASTIC. The other 40% can be ground up tennis shoes. Normally it’s lower grade foam that will not perform as well. WHY WOULD THEY PUT INFERIOR FOAM IN THE BED? BECAUSE IT COSTS LESS. Then they can advertise a $699 memory foam bed and you get a free stereo with it. (I’ll bet that sounds good)

The Construction
Next, there is the construction. All foam beds start out in liquid form and are poured into molds. The cheapest process is to mix it all together and make a solid block of foam. This has some negative results. First is that with one solid block of foam there is nowhere for air to flow, so they get HOT. Next, due to poor airflow they can retain odors. Then due to the inferior foam in the bed, they will start breaking down in a few years. We all have purchased beds in the past that needed to be replaced in a year or two but you will not have to again.

There are various problems that we can have concerning sleep and bedding. Which ones do you experience?
-Deep Valleys
-Roll Together In The Middle
-Hump In The Middle (Especially With Kings)
-Feeling Your Partner Move
-Lower Back Pain
-Sore Or Tingling Shoulder And/Or Hip
-Sore Neck
-Tossing And Turning

These are some of the most common but some of us have experienced more. Fibromyalgia comes to mind, restless leg syndrome and more. Non-coiled beds certainly will not relieve every one of these but it certainly can help.

The Benefits Of Non-Coiled Beds
BETTER SLEEP POSITION: foam is designed to mold to your most comfortable position. Coils support you through resistance – they push up against your body. Quality foam beds support your body through conformity.

BETTER SPINE ALIGNMENT: A quality foam mattress allows for neutral positioning of the spine through even body support. This keeps your back aligned throughout the night.

SAGPROOF MATTRESSES: Sags come from metal fatigue. Coils are metal so without them – NO SAGS - This also removes the need to flip the mattress. The famous hump in the middle is also caused by sags. A bed sags on each of the sides that you sleep on – no one is in the middle – no sags but WHAT A HUMP!

ALLERGIES AND DUST MITES - Foam is naturally resistant to dust mites and other microorganisms: Dust mites cannot build a habitat in a latex/memory foam environment as there is no food to survive on as opposed to the inside of regular mattress. (NOTE: 40% of the weight of a 7 year old regular – unprotected mattress is living and dead dust mites and their waste.) Most foam beds are hypoallergenic and antibacterial.

PRESSURE POINT RELIEF – shoulders and hips are far too often the victims of stiff, pressuring coils. Foam beds = NO COILS = NO PRESSURE POINTS.

MOTION TRANSFER – Feeling your partner move. Motion energy is transferred through coils – Again, no coils = no motion transfer.

These are just some of the benefits that a quality foam bed offers. Every problem (like snoring – my partner wishes) cannot be taken care of. Who knows what technology will bring. In the mean time, if you consider your particular problems and what a quality foam bed can do – You will see that a quality foam bed can be very effective in helping you achieve a healthy, comfortable, good night’s sleep.

At this time, we at Sit & Sleep carry 3 different types of foam in 12 models. We have intensively researched these and feel they have great value and will meet or exceed your expectations. Please come in to try them because even though we can tell you everything about how they are made – WE CAN’T TELL YOU WHAT FEELS GOOD TO YOU.

Remember, at Sit & Sleep, WE DO NOT GET A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP UNLESS YOU DO.

Mattress Sizes: Cutting Through The Misinformation

The Other Stores Just Can't Measure Up
At first glance, mattress sizes look pretty straight forward. That can quickly change once you start shopping for that new set. Queen, king, split foundations, California sizes, twin extra long, queen short. It can be enough to make your head spin, and to make things worse, there are a lot of misinformed salesmen out there. In this article, we are going to lay it all out in a way that is easy to understand. Whip out your handy dandy tape measurer and let's get started.

The Standard Sizes
The four basic sizes are pretty straight forward.

- Twin Size (Single): 39" x 75"
- Full Size (Double): 54" x 80"
- Queen Size: 60" x 80"
- King Size: 76"(wide) x 80"(head to foot)

These are the four basic sizes. There are several things to consider when choosing the right mattress size. Obviously, if two people will be sharing a bed, it needs to be a full size or larger. The next thing you need to determine is how tall is the tallest person that will be using the bed. Generally speaking a twin/full bed will comfortably accommodate someone up to about six feet. Once you cross that threshold, the extra five inches you gain with the king/queen from heat to foot really comes into play.

The Long And The Short Of It
The term extra long can be a little misleading. Most mattress manufacturers offer their twin (single) and full (double) models in an optional extra long size. This simply means that instead of the standard 75" (reference the chart above) from head to foot, they are the same length as a queen/king at 80". This results in the following:

- Twin Extra Long: 39" x 80"
- Full Extra Long: 54" x 80"

These sizes can be especially useful when there is a need for a long narrow bed. The most common application for these sizes is college dorm rooms. It's also worth noting that two twin extra long mattresses size by side make a king. This primarily comes into play when someone purchases a split king configuration.

The queen short is primarily used in campers and motor homes. It is the width of a queen, but the length of a full.

- Queen Short: 60" x 75"

Though not used very often, there is also such thing as a three quarter bed. It measures 48" x 75", and it is typically needed with antique beds. Most manufacturers no longer produce these, and they are quite expensive to special order. In other words, it's time to put Granny's old four post bed on Craig's List.

The California Sizes
You've probably heard about California king mattresses, but did you know that there are also California queens? Most folks think Cal kings are larger, but that's only half true. Let's dig into these odd sizes.

- California Queen: 60" x 84"
- California King: 72" x 84"

As you can see, the California sizes are 4" longer than their regular counterparts. The Cal queen is the same width as a standard queen, but the Cal king loses 4" in width when compared to the standard king. These sizes are obsolete unless you are 6'4" or taller. They are not offered in every model, and finding linens and beds that fit them can be a bit of a challenge.

The Things That The Mattress Usually Sits On
There is a bit of confusion about what most folks call a box spring. In the early days, the mattress typically laid on top of a true box spring. There were springs in there that moved all around and made all kinds of racket once they had a few miles on them. From there, mattress manufacturers began to lean more and more towards a solid platform for the mattress to sit on. We now call that a foundation.

Foundations simply don't have any springs in them. They are usually a solid wood platform that have no give to them. Most mattresses have been redesigned to take that into account. I am asked on a daily basis if a new mattress can go on an existing box spring/foundation. My answer is always, "yes, but I don't recommend it." The reason I don't recommend it is because the foundation can make a big difference in the way a mattress feels. If you purchase a mattress designed to go on a foundation, and you put it on an existing box spring, it will feel much softer and could potentially sag in the middle. Conversely, if you put a mattress designed to be used with a box spring on an existing foundation, it could feel too firm and might have a crown across the top. The bottom line is that the foundation/box spring is a small percentage of the set price, and I always recommend buying in sets. If you ever have an issue that might need to be covered under warranty, the first thing the manufacturer will look for is if the mattress was purchased as a set. Some manufacturers will void the warranty if you put their mattress on a different foundation.

The foundation can be quite important when it comes to the overall height of the mattress set. I frequently have customers come in measuring our mattress sets, eliminating certain sets from the hunt based on overall height. That is not the thing to do. You should always buy a mattress set based on your budget and comfort level. We stock standard and low profile foundations in every size ranging from the standard 9" thick all the way down to 1" thick on the super low profile. We will help you find the comfort level that is just right for you, then custom fit the height to meet your needs. There is never an up charge at Sit & Sleep for a low profile or super low profile foundation.
Split foundations are another subject of misinformation. Typically, a twin, full, and queen set will have a solid, size-matched foundation. In the case of a king, the foundation always comes in two split halves, also known as a twin XL foundation. It has to be done this way because in a lot of houses, particularly if the bed is going upstairs, a solid king foundation would not make the bends and turns to get to the bedroom. King foundations are always split up the middle to remedy this. In rare cases, a split queen foundation is needed to get the mattress set in the tightest of spaces. By now, I'm sure it's no surprise that we also keep those in stock.
- Split Queen Foundations: 30" x 80"
Hopefully, that cleared up any questions you had about mattress sizes, and if it didn't, you are probably taking this mattress buying process a little too far :) If there is any information that you still need, feel free to call me at 912-961-0202 seven days a week. We look forward to earning your business!
